Did NBC cover up sexual harassment allegations against MATT LAUER?
NBC may have lied about covering up sexual harassment allegations against Matt Lauer for years
by Emily Jashinsky | Nov 29, 2017, 6:17 PM

Matt Lauer's network was first to break the news of his firing on Wednesday, citing one enigmatic complaint of "inappropriate sexual behavior" lodged against the anchor on Monday without providing further details, though conceding executives also had "reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident." But before close of business, Variety published a shocking and apparently well-sourced report rife with disturbing allegations about Lauer's behavior.

There is a key discrepancy, however, between the information NBC News Chairman Andy Lack provided in his memo to staffers announcing Lauer's firing and the information sources relayed to Variety. In his memo, Lack described the allegation brought against Lauer on Monday as "the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News." But the Variety report claims "[s]everal women told" the news outlet in interviews "they complained to executives at the network about Lauer's behavior," saying their complaints "fell on deaf ears given the lucrative advertising surrounding 'Today.'"

That report cites sources who alleged Lauer's penchant for inappropriate sexual conduct was "not a secret" among Today show staffers. One former reporter told Variety that executives who previously worked on the program "protected the shit out of Matt Lauer."

Given the alleged breadth and duration of his behavior, and NBC's obvious interest in protecting its brand, Variety's reporting makes it difficult to believe the company received only one complaint about Lauer in 20 years. Several women told the outlet they complained about the top anchor to network executives.

Were those previous complaints swept under the rug then or now? It seems possible the answer is both.
