Rising Tensions on Korean Peninsula Put Region at Risk
Bruce Klingner April 14, 2017

When Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson traveled to Asia earlier this year, the principle objective was to reassure allies that the Trump administration would maintain the U.S. commitment to defend them.

Vice President Mike Pence will now reaffirm that message during his own trip, which comes amid increased fears of an imminent preemptive U.S. attack on North Korea in expectation of a possible nuclear test and/or missile launch.

Pence should explain to our allies the results of the administration’s recently completed North Korea policy review, as well as the results of the U.S.-China summit.

Indications are that the White House will prioritize re-strengthening the U.S. military to offset degradations in capabilities incurred from budget cuts over the last several years. Deterrence and defense will also be increased through augmented ballistic missile capabilities.  read more

THE STARS IN THEIR COURSES
APRIL 15, 2017 JOHN HINDERAKER    POWERLINE

In Syria, in Afghanistan, in North Korea, in Russia and Iran, the wheel is in spin. No one knows what will happen. Will President Trump’s suddenly assertive foreign policy be vindicated? I hope so. I agree with Charles Krauthammer that America is back, and with Paul that kicking the can down the road on North Korea–Obama’s foreign policy, when he wasn’t actively trying to undermine American interests–is no longer viable.

Reporters, searching as always for an anti-Trump angle, are mostly fixated on the President’s supposed flip-flops. (They tend not to mention his campaign vow to “bomb the s*** out of ISIS.”) Whatever. The fact that “America first” was an isolationist message in the 1930s does not mean that it is an isolationist message today. Trump has consistently vowed to build up the nation’s military. I, for one, inferred that he would occasionally be willing to use it.

While we are waiting for events to unfold, we may as well enjoy a few cartoons. Michael Ramirez has been inspired by recent events.

Street Artist Mocks Kim Jong-Un with ‘Trump North Korean BBQ’ PostersDANIEL NUSSBAUM  13 Apr 2017  BREITBART
Los Angeles-based street artist provocateur Sabo is back again, this time to skewer North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with a series of mock posters promoting a fictional line of “Trump’s North Korean BBQ.”
The mock posters — which have popped up around the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles — feature the North Korean dictator’s head superimposed onto a roasted pig’s body, and with an apple placed in his mouth. Alongside the image is an insert of a smiling Trump.

The taglines for the mock advertisements include “The finest in K-town,” “The world’s greatest really,” and “Cooked up by five star chef James Mattis.”  read more
North Korea May Be Preparing a Nuclear Test for Kim Il-Sung’s Birthday
FRANCES MARTEL  13 Apr 2017  BREITBART

North Korea has begun preparing festivities for the “Day of the Sun,” a holiday celebrating communist leader Kim Il-Sung. Satellite images suggest that among those festivities may be the nation’s sixth nuclear test, which would arrive at a particularly tempestuous time in the relationship between Pyongyang and its largest benefactor, China.

The satellite images in question appeared on the website 38 North this week, dedicated to monitoring North Korean nuclear sites for unusual activity. The outlet warned that the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site appeared “primed and ready” for such a nuclear test due to the amount of water and heat apparently coming out of the facility.

NBC News notes that the day before the 38 North report, Pyongyang “warned it would strike the U.S. mainland with nuclear weapons at any sign of aggression from Washington.” This, however, is not an unusual occurrence; last month, for example, North Korea threatened a nuclear strike on Manhattan.

The South Korean newswire service Yonhap reports that their sources within the South Korean military disagreed with the conclusions in the report, saying there had been “no unusual” activity at the site, or any other such nuclear site in the country to their knowledge.

“Another defense official here did not rule out the possibility that the unpredictable North will carry out a nuclear test without special indications spotted, given its past provocation,” the report added.  read more
